Barrio Bookmobile accepts new and gently used books.
Why new and gently used books? Because Barrio Bookmobile serves Title I students who often receive free lunches, live in subsidized housing, receive English-language tutoring, or read below grade level, and a new or gently used book is a gift that is chosen, kept, and treasured by the students.
A new and gently used book tells a child, "You are worthy!" Also, a book like that feels good in the hands of a child – and is treated like a prized possession. Children are more likely to learn about responsibility if they find value in their possessions.
New and gently used books also encourage reading and heightens a sense of anticipation about receiving another book.
